Sore throats are usually caused by colds and flu and will quickly respond to remedies for these conditions. (See page 144 for more information on treating colds and flu.) However, in some cases a sore throat may be caused by pollution, smoking, or even yelling or talking too much. Less often, a sore throat is produced by a bacteria called streptococcus, which must be treated by a doctor. Sore throats that are caused by infections will usually be accompanied by other symptoms, such as a fever or general aches and pains.
Native Americans had a number of remedies for soothing sore throats, but the most popular was herbal teas, which can be used both as a gargle and a drink. Repeat the treatments every few hours until your throat improves.
Some of the best teas for throat pain include echinacea, goldenrod, licorice root, pine needles, mullein, peppermint, rose petals, sage, slippery elm, and willow.
