Mononucleosis begins with flulike symptoms—aches, tiredness, runny nose, and the like, as well as occasionally a rash similar to German measles. It is caused by a herpeslike organism called Epstein-Barr virus. The lymph glands in the neck swell and, very occasionally, there are rashes, a sore throat, or digestive upset.
A blood test will confirm mononucleosis, and early diagnosis can be useful, as it can last for months. It should be handled very, very carefully, as postviral fatigue syndrome can easily ensue if the body’s energies are not supported and fortified. It has become a common precursor of myalgic encephalomyelitis (chronic fatigue syndrome)
