Native American Shingles Natural Treatment

The problem with shingles is that the virus that causes it, a member of the herpes family, never goes away. After an attack it retreats into the body until one day it rises to the surface again, triggering a painful rash on the face or torso. Within a week or two, the rash turns into blisters similar to those caused by chicken pox.

There is no cure for shingles. The virus often burns itself out, but in the meantime all you can do is cope with the pain. Many herbalists report successfully treating the condition with strong skin washes made from the popular Native American herbs lemon balm, licorice root, and purslane, all of which are loaded with anti-viral compounds.

To make a wash, add a teaspoonful of dry herb (or two teaspoons of fresh) to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, then strain and let cool. You can apply the washes directly to the skin or by using a wet compress.
