The sleepless night has to rank among our worst nightmares, and certainly among our most common. In a recent survey of over 1,000 adults, one-third said they routinely had trouble falling asleep.
It’s not known to what degree Native Americans had similar problems getting enough quality shut-eye, but they developed a number of remedies to aid in sleep. Here are a few you may want to try.
Calm yourself with herbs. To help your mind and body prepare for sleep, herbalists recommend taking a calming tea, made with hops, lady’s slipper, vervain, or willow shortly before bedtime.
Have a relaxing soak. Another way to use herbs is to add them to bathwater, says herbalist David Hoffmann. He recommends adding two handfuls of dried herb (or four handfuls of fresh) to three cups of boiling water. Let the water stand for 30 minutes, strain, then add the liquid to bathwater. As the medicinal compounds in herbs are absorbed through the skin, they can create a sense of “full-body” calming, Hoffmann says.
